Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Creating a calming area in my classroom will provide a safe and supportive space for young children to manage their emotions and find comfort when feeling overwhelmed or upset. This space will create opportunities for my students to learn to cope with their feelings and find ways to de-escalate. I want to create a place where my students can take a break, and self-regulate. A calming area with books, comfortable seating, and calming manipulatives, can help them manage the big feelings that young children often feel.
A calming corner is a place where little hearts can find their way back to peace.
My students need a calming area with a storage bench, sofa, storage baskets and sensory items to help them learn and model good social-emotional skills. The bean bags will help them relax or take a break when needed. The mindful breathing board will help them learn breathing techniques, learning to breathe deeply and mindfully. The baskets will hold the calming tools they may need to self-regulate. The bench and sofa will provide flexible and comfortable seating for students.
