My Students
My students are creative, active, and ready to go! They absolutely love learning - especially when the classroom environment is positive, comfortable, and supportive of their various needs. I have 100 students and within that community are many students identified with special needs such as anxiety, ADD, ADHD, and autism. A room with flexible seating can help support all students, and especially those with special needs. In addition, the school is an arts academy and I am always looking for ways to integrate art - painting, photography, culinary, gardening - into the academic curriculum.
Combining a positive physical setting with the potent power of the arts lifts these intelligent and inquisitive students to great heights in achievement.
This class is part of a large middle school that celebrates inclusion. My classroom is about building skills and accepting differences to instill positive climate and growth.
My Project
I use flexible seating because I have seen how students feel empowered by having some choice and control over their environment. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed. In addition, kids need to move! Comfortable seating allows them to bounce their legs against chair fidget bands, lean back in a bean bag, nestle with a weighted lap blanket - which also helps keep students' minds more alert and focused.
I have found that flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive.
In my experience, comfortable students are more likely to be engaged students.
Lastly, our world needs people who can collaborate. Flexible seating allows students to quickly and easily pair up, work in small groups, or discuss as a whole class – without dragging chairs or moving desks.
It takes a bit of time to establish the norms of flexible seating, but the results? – a more active, engaged, enthusiastic, and relaxed room of students – are worth the effort.
