My Students
My classroom is place where I encourage reading, especially reading for learning. I want students to be life-long learners, and I believe reading is the way to ignite this process. My students are sponges for information on their futures and how to make them brighter.
We live in a high poverty area where a large portion of our student body k-12 is eligible to receive free or reduced lunch.
By the time students reach me, many of them have jobs or are caring for younger siblings. Many of my students are curious about the choices that will be made in their last two years of high school; they often come to me for guidance and direction on the choices they face. They are information hungry when it comes to their futures.
My Project
We need texts on paying for college and supplies to create infographics. The books will serve as part of an informational reading unit on living a fiscally responsible life. Not only is informational reading a useful endeavor, but financial literacy is as well.
Students will choose a text/topic to read and research. This will be done in small groups around one text or idea. Students will use this information to plan and design their own infographics on their topics. I will work in conjunction with our college adviser and technology teacher to create these. These infographics will be posted throughout the school and digitally. This is a project that, with these materials, can be replicated year after year.
I hope that students will look at these texts and consider their futures.
If I can help make that happen for even a portion of my students, I will have changed lives with your help. I also believe that the students' sharing what they learn through infographics will provide sparks to light this desire in others.
