This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is never too early to learn the value of earning and saving for the future. My students were excited to create their own classroom money, now they want to buy school supplies.

I work in a Title I school with about 98% of the students receiving free or reduced rate lunch.

Most of my students are learning English as a second language. They are sweet and eager to learn, but they do not have basic background knowledge in most areas. Most of their families have barely enough for basic needs to be met. They often borrow supplies from a neighbor or from me. They want their own materials. They need to learn how to count and use money as a life skill.

My Project

My students need to earn classroom money to buy school supplies. The crayons, pencils, and journals will be labeled with a price and earned through their hard work. My students were excited to obtain the materials necessary to make their own classroom money through our last project. I asked them what they would like to buy with their money; pencils, crayons, and journals were their answers. They will learn through hard work they can obtain what they need to be successful.

This project will show them that their teacher does listen.

They will know that their voice is heard and their opinion is valued. They wanted school supplies which tells me they are motivated and ready to be a success.
