Financial Literary: A Secure Financial Future

My Students

I am a committed 4th Grade Social Studies and Science teacher to 75 delightful students at a Title I school located in a rural but loving community.

Many of the students come from poverty stricken environments, and all of the students receive free lunch and breakfast.

In spite of some of their conditions, they still strive to come to school to give learning their very best. However, these students are in need of various supplies and reading materials and resources necessary for them to be effective and successful in reaching their goals, not only in school but life.

My Project

Braunstein and Welch state, "Making effective financial decisions and knowing how to manage money are skills critical to enjoying a secure financial future. Yet many individuals and families lack the knowledge necessary to make sound financial choices, as evidenced by falling savings rates, mounting consumer debt, and a growing dependence on alternative banking institutions."

I believe it is important for low income students to learn the value of knowing how to manage their money to prepare for a successful future.

We will begin our financial literacy unit with the introduction of a classroom store. Students will apply for jobs such as banker, store manager, safety patrol, bathroom monitor, lunch supervisor, paper collector, and custodial crew. Each position will earn a weekly salary, and performance will be monitored. Students will be paid with tickets, and will be responsible for maintaining a balanced checkbook. Students will also earn tickets for arriving to school on time, completing their homework, classroom participation, and good grades. Students may spend their tickets in our classroom store. Students may purchase items such as candy, snacks, pencils, erasers, glue, and other classroom supplies that their family's are not able to afford. Students will also learn how to complete a job application, which will be printed using our classroom printer and funded ink and paper. It is my hope that students will learn to budget their tickets and make purchases according to their needs and not wants.
