Financial Literacy through our Student Store

My students need small toys and candy for a student store to increase their concept of financial literacy in earning, saving, and spending money wisely. Hokki stools and standing desks will be incentives to earn currency.

My Students

My class is full of students who are excited to be at school each day to see what we will learn. Our favorite time is pulling out a keyboard and singing songs together that help us to learn our letter sounds, math facts, and about the world around us.

All of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The diversity that exists in our school comes from the reservation which borders our district and the Hispanic population that helps our farming community.

My Project

Financial literacy can be a pretty abstract concept to a first grade student. However, by creating a classroom store filled with items that will require students to carefully evaluate their wants and needs, even small children can begin to understand the importance of earning, saving, and planning for financial purchases. Students will earn classroom currency through completing assignments and displaying positive and responsible classroom behavior. This currency will then be used when our student store opens once a week. Each of the items, from the suckers, chocolates and gummy candies to the stretchy toys, slap bracelets, cars, stuffed animals, stress balls and bubbles, will be priced so that some items can be purchased quickly, while others will take saving and planning on the students' part.

In our Title One school, where so many of our students come from financially challenged households, teaching them financial literacy at a young age will have a long lasting impact.

By allowing students that may struggle to sit to use Hokki Stools and standing desks, all students will have an opportunity to focus and complete assignments to earn the class currency and participate in the student store.
