This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Spread sheets, bank accounts, deficits, these are all things that we can begin to learn about as early as second grade. Being financially literate can start in second grade with a rewards system that will teach students how money is earned, spent, and saved.

My students live in the poorest of inner-city neighborhoods.

They spend long hours at school daily and receive most, if not all, of their meals there as well. They lack even the most basic of school supplies. Yet everyday they come to school with hopes and dreams of greatness. They live amongst industrial buildings and train tracks. They seldom have an opportunity to venture out of their neighborhood or their homes due to the gang violence that plagues the streets. All my students love art and they all have an artist within them just waiting to get out.

My Project

I am requesting an Apple MacBook Air Laptop to introduce my students to financial literacy. I my plan to introduce my students to a system where they will see school as their jobs. They will earn money (pretend money) for completing assignments, rewards, good behavior, and bonuses by excelling in test and extra credit or effort. Students can also be fined for missed or late assignment, or breaking class and yard rules. Students will use the Apple MacBook Air Laptop to learn to create spreadsheets that will keep their finances in order. They will learn to create budgets and spend their funds appropriately. Students will have to turn in spread sheets to be checked by the teacher. This will help them also with addition and subtraction of money. They will also work as teams to keep their accounts balanced and avoid going into deficit. The Apple MacBook Air Laptop will additionally be used by students to research how our taxes are used.

I think having a Apple MacBook Air Laptop will change my students prospective of financial literacy.

Many of my students think that all one has to do is go to the ATM to withdraw money. They do not completely understand they money is earned and that households have budgets to adhere to. Having an Apple MacBook Air Laptop will bring endless possibilities and opportunities to my classroom.
