Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My project replicates Shark Tank!: Entrepreneurship with New-to-Country Students. When I read the PwC Shark Tank project, it inspired me to bring a mini-community unit to my kindergarteners. With a little adapting for their young ages, I can use this idea to teach financial literacy in a fun way.

My kindergarten students are English Language Learners who are eager to learn.

My students come from diverse backgrounds with approximately 25 languages and cultures. Our school is a high poverty, Title One school. We spend our mornings working on counting the days of school, and learning to skip count with songs and sharing. Important basic skills are knowing how to count money, add and subtract. The concept of money and its worth is difficult for kindergarteners. My mini business community will make this a fun learning experience. My students will first earn class money by completing assignments and doing chores such as cleaning the classroom. To adapt the Shark Tank concept for kindergarteners, we will work together as a whole group, creating businesses that provide services and goods. Students will have to persuade the teacher that their ideas will be successful. This will help them develop vocabulary and communication skills.

My Project

I would like to develop a mini community where students will operate their own stores, buying and selling services and goods to each other. These businesses might range from cleaning service providers using the Swiffer Sweeper, Body Art Stores using washable body art pens, or snack shops providing individually wrapped snacks for selling goods. The students will work together to plan and put their businesses into place. They will be able to keep track of their earnings and research types of businesses using the iPad. On-line games will also provide more individual practice with counting and sorting coins from the iPad. The Money Activity Station will help them learn how to make purchases and pay for them. All the art supplies will be used to create signs of the items being sold in each store. The cash register will be used to make transactions seem more real. This mini community will teach financial literacy in hands-on, practical experience that will make learning fun.

Your donation will sharpen our kindergarten students' money management skills.

We will be able to implement a social study unit with math concepts to create a business community where everybody takes part in the project, becoming entrepreneurs along the way. Our students will take this experience as they become an important member of our mini business community. Please join us in funding this project!
