Financial Literacy: Lunch Count

My students need lunchboxes, journals, and a coupon binder for financial literacy. The panda is our mascot, which is why everything is panda themed.

My Students

When I was in school, one of the class jobs was to take the lunch count to the cafeteria. This consisted of the number of students who were buying lunch choice 1, lunch choice 2, or just milk. My mom insisted that bringing a lunch from home was more economical and that is what I almost always did.

My students are academically gifted students attending a globally themed school.

The particular group of students that would benefit from this project are in the 4th and 5th grade. These students demonstrate their ability to be the movers and shakers, problem solvers, creative thinkers, and leaders in their classes, the school, and some day in our world. In fact, many of them are members of the Junior Beta Club. As such, they volunteer many hours collecting items for people in need and caring for the school grounds through beautification projects. A recent project includes collecting donations to support a college scholarship fund. Setting goals and making choices that help us achieve our goals is a skill that these students are working toward mastering. Their goal for the scholarship fund was to raise $100 and they are well on their way to achieving that goal.

My Project

In the elementary grades, financial literacy can take on many forms. Our financial literacy project encourages students and their families to take on a challenge to compare the cost of purchasing school lunches to the cost of packing a lunch from home. Providing insulated lunch bags will be the first step toward involving students in the project. The next item I want to provide is a hard cover panda journal for students to keep track of their choices, spending, and savings as it relates to school lunch. The final item we need is a binder to encourage coupon swapping. If all goes according to plan, students will maintain a daily record of their choice to eat a school lunch or bring a lunch from home. They will record the amount of money spent on school lunches (maybe breakfast too) & the amount of money that their family spent on items for packed lunches. Students will also cut coupons from newspapers & magazines that can be swapped using our class binder.

Every day, working adults are faced with a decision to bring their lunch to work or pack their lunch.

This authentic learning experience will help students realize the effect this decision can have on their finances. Financial literacy is best taught through real-world experiences. Everyone needs to eat lunch. Learning about the costs associated with this simple choice to buy lunch or bring lunch can make a lasting impression.
