Financial Literacy- It Makes Cents to Start Early!

Help me give my students classroom resources to introduce financial literacy.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Turner's classroom raised $557

My Project

The biggest goal for this project is to introduce Kindergarten students to a new concept--financial literacy. Kindergarten students will use donated resources to build knowledge about money, budgeting, the difference between wants/needs, and saving for the future. We will begin by reading and exploring the new books during our carpet time. Students will have opportunities to play with the wooden food sets and create an imaginary store where we will practice paying for items and making decisions about needs and wants. We will use the new workbook pages to further explore the differences in coins. We will sort difference coins and learn the values of each.

The requested items will make a huge difference in the learning of my Kindergarten students because we currently do not have financial literacy built into our curriculum.

My students and their families are very special to me because they work hard to make life better for their children. We are an urban school with young learners who would certainly benefit from positive experiences with money and budgeting. We will invite families into the classroom to show them our new donated items and share our new knowledge and experiences about money and budgeting. We will serve food from our imaginary store. Each student will receive their very own piggy bank with a few shiny coins to take home in order to continue to grow the idea that it makes "cents" to start saving early.
