Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 6th grade math at a Title I school, where over 95% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and 84% of them are second language learners. Still, our school has an ongoing tradition of academic excellence. We believe each child is unique and deserving of a rich, educational experience.
I recently attended an in-service on teaching math, and was inspired to use more manipulatives with my students. After looking at our California State Standards, I found that most of the 6th grade math standards can be taught using money. Money could be the driving force behind the understanding of decimals, algebra, integers, and of course taxes and discounts.
Yes, we could simply discuss math problems on the board. However, manipulatives help engage students. We need pretend money that students can use to understand the problems in a more concrete format. Money they can use to find the missing value of x (which has been stuffed into an envelope). Money they can use to figure out the checks and balances of integers. Money they can use to add decimals... and the ideas continue.
The great thing about this project is that it teaches financial literacy as well. As they become more aware of how money and numbers work, students will realize that math will help them become smarter independent thinkers and consumers that will aid their financial future. Thank you for your interest.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
