Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my community are motivated to learn by innovation and critical thinking. They come from low socio-economic backgrounds and therefore have minimal resources and opportunities at home. The classroom, the school, and the community are all places for them to explore and excel. With the nearby park/recreation center, involvement from the local police department, and several community led activities on the school campus, the students and their families are exposed to various windows of opportunity to flourish and thrive.

My Project

My students need a laptop to help them learn about financial literacy. They will learn how to manage, earn, and save for their future in a realistic manner. My students will be able to use the laptop to research their ideas of the "hows" and "whys" of saving money. We will be able to download software programs, such as Investopedia, which will teach them the financial concepts and be visual aids. This program will allow my students to learn about earning money, goods and services, needs and wants, spending choices, saving for short-term goals, and savings accounts. There are also useful tools to use while teaching the concept of financial security. They will learn how to budget what they earn, and learn basic mental math skills at the same time (rounding dollars and cents). Acquiring real-world skills will allow my students to plan better for their future.

The donation of a laptop will help my classroom be more financially literate and distinguish the difference between spending and saving.

In addition, they will learn to become financially literate by acquiring money managing skills because it is an essential component of life.
