This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students learn best when given the opportunity to live the experience! I want them to develop financial literacy by creating their own currency, and earning, spending and saving it just like real money!

You are never too young to start developing financial literacy.

With 3D printing tools and plastic filament, prize box fillers and a model cash register, you can help my transitional kindergarteners learn what it means to earn, spend and save money. These youngsters are so bright and curious. They attend a high poverty, Title I school, but with the help of DonorsChoose, our classroom has been blessed with a MakerBot 3D printer. I would love to put this printer to use to help my students learn about the importance of having a monetary system. My students are diverse culturally, linguistically and economically. Some have special learning needs, and some are learning English for the very first time. I seek to meet their learning needs by providing visuals, manipulatives that they can touch and handle, stories that interest and motivate them, and chances to actually experience the concepts we are learning about.

My Project

Prior to designing and printing our classroom currency, the children will participate in a unit study in which they listen to stories about our nation's coins and dollars, and learn what they look like, their worth, and ways that people use them. They will also write about what they've learned, and use this opportunity to draw their own coins. We will select some of their drawings to print on our 3D printer, and assign the printed coins easy to learn monetary values. Throughout the year, the children will be able to earn coins by doing good work, showing good character, putting forth extra effort, and doing extra chores to keep our room and play yard in good condition. They will get to spend their coins on prizes and other incentives, or for extra time with a favorite activity such as computer or art. They can save their coins for a bigger prize, such as a class party, trip or visitor. We will even use the filament to print out bank boxes!

The toy cash register will be placed in the dramatic play area, so that the children can act out the experience of shopping, both from the shopper and shopkeeper perspectives.

They love this activity, and whole-heartedly act out situations they have seen their parents in, spending hard earned money for both necessities and luxuries. A donation to this project can go twice as far, because PWC is offering to double donations to projects just like this. Your help can make all the difference!
