Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a hard working community that values family and perseverance. We are a Title I school where learning is accompanied by many social and emotional experiences.
School is often a safe haven for our students.
They feel safe and secure in coming to school every day. I am teaching 5th grade this year, so students are in great need of physical activity, creative outlets, and innovative modes of learning to unlock their potential.
Many students speak English as their second language, so this added challenge only makes school life harder. They have the drive to learn and welcome experiences that are fun. Our students are 80 percent Latino and 20 percent African American.
We are located in an urban community where violence is common. Giving my kids the chance to see that the world is bigger than their surrounding neighborhood will give them the opportunity to succeed.
My Project
Financial literacy is a big topic we need to address in education. The economy plays a vital role in how our students will live when they are older, and getting them prepared for their financial future should start now. They are eager to engage in financial dealings. We use real world money problems when teaching fractions, decimals, and number sense. They use financial skills when applying themselves in our classroom economy. We have classroom jobs, where they get paid in class bucks every week. They are able to spend their money in our class store on Fridays, and learn the value of saving by paying for things that make our classroom run efficiently. This simulating real world economy is one of their favorite activities, so I know they would benefit tremendously from the kit I am requesting.
