This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every 10 year old LOVES money! The problem is, I'm finding most of my students don't really UNDERSTAND money. They don't have a concept of the value of money, and certainly not of how to save, invest, or budget to make the most of their resources. My students truly need Financial Literacy.

I teach a dynamic group of 5th graders who come to school each day to build a better future for themselves.

Over 90% of the students in our Title 1 school receive free or reduced lunch, and over 25% of them are English language learners. Our school strives to have a "No Excuses" attitude when it comes to preparing our students for successful futures. We utilize technology throughout instruction, and incorporate character education and college readiness in all we do. My students are destined for success, and I will do whatever it takes to prepare them for that. I am looking to implement financial literacy programs like PwC’s Earn Your Future modules, Acceleron Learning's curriculum, and The Stock Market Game both during class and in an extracurricular setting to help my students truly be college and career ready. But, I am lacking materials, and my students are lacking skills.

My Project

My students live in a time and place where you spend the money you have...without regard for when there will not be any left. There is not any focus on saving or investing for the future. They do not have a true sense of how much money it will require to have the successful lives they dream of. I want to help them improve their financial literacy along with their reading and math literacy, so that those dreams can become realities. Fractions, decimals, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division...all of it relates to money! By connecting our math concepts to money, students will be able to improve their understanding of both. Having money and games to use in the classroom will make this real for my students and deepen their understanding. We're always reading in my classroom. How better to help my students than increase the amount of books in our library that deal with money. Students will read to learn about earning, budgeting, investing...all aspects of financial literacy.

Financial Literacy can become the springboard for my students.

My goal is to build on that literacy to improve math skills, reading skills, career and college goal setting, and life skills. With your help, it can become the backbone of our program! Your donation to this project will allow these students to change their life trajectory. By developing a clear understanding of the value of money and true financial literacy, they will be set on the path toward successful economic futures.
