Financial Literacy for Students with Special Needs

My students need a variety of money manipulatives, activities, and games to increase their financial literacy.

My Students

Students with special needs have many adversities they face in their lifetimes. One major hardship is managing and handling of money.

My students are in a self contained special needs functional academics classroom setting.

Their grades range from 1st through 6th grade. They have difficulty functioning in a general education setting and need a lot of support. They are in a low income area where all of them are on free lunches.

My Project

By providing different financial literacy activities, such as manipulatives, center activities, and games, these students can begin to receive a visual, auditory, and kinesthetic way of learning how to identify, count, and spend money. These supplies will also help teach students how to be responsible with money. In my classroom, I have a token economy system in which the students earn money for good behavior. At the end of the week, the students are allowed to shop at the classroom store. They have to count how much money they have earned, then have to figure out what they can afford to buy. This is a great learning activity, but I see that the students need a lot more work with their money skills. These items will also allow them to be independent later in life.

Remember, you will not only be providing better tools in a classroom, but a better foundation laid for those who are less fortunate.

You will make it possible for my students to succeed in their financial literacy by giving them the opportunity to use supplies that they do not currently have access to.
