This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Making change is a foreign concept to most 2nd graders. They do not go to the store alone, nor do they see their parents use coins and bills to pay at stores. Yet, counting money and making change is a very important life skill that will later translate into balancing a checkbook.

My students live in the inner-city.

They come from very modest means. They spend countless hours at school and rarely venture outside their industrial neighborhood. They all qualify for free federal lunches and cannot afford basic school supplies such as pencils, paper, and books. Yet, they come to school daily with a smile and ready to do their very best. They have great aspirations and are eager to learn new things. My students are caring and have the biggest hearts and regardless of all their struggles they work hard to overcome many hurdles in their lives.

My Project

I am requesting plastic coins to teach my students what each coin is worth and how to add various combinations of coins. As I teach this skill I realize the importance of having actual coins. To my student coins on a black and white piece of paper all look the same. When adding coins I want to teach them to start counting with the coin that holds the greatest value. My students need these plastic coins to order and count on. In addition, I am requesting, a Money Problem solving center, to allow students multiple opportunities to practice adding, subtracting, and counting money in a variety of life imitating ways. Also, I am asking for a real life cash register. I want my students to use is to play store and in this way learn how to make accurate change.

Please give my students the right tools to learn how to count, add and subtract money (coins).

By teaching them how to handle money, count it, and make proper change I am teaching my students a skill that will be of use for a lifetime. Thank you for supporting a class in need.
