Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Energy. Excitement. Movement. Thinking. These are four things that happen in our classroom everyday. My students are eager learners that want the best for themselves.
My school is a Title I school located in diverse metropolitan area.
We have 7 third grade classes, each with approximately 25 students who come from very similar situations. The majority of the students in the school come from low income families, many of whom are also from Hispanic families. Almost 95% of the students in my classroom are ELL learners whose native language (and the language spoken primarily at home) is Spanish.
My Project
With new math initiatives happening nation wide, my school is learning new ways to meet them. One way we are trying to meet them is through practical math skills: connecting what we are learning in the classroom to real life. Every math skill we learn, we connect it up with how it helps us in "life outside of school". One of the easiest, and yet somehow most difficult, topics to connect to practical life math is money. Kids watch their parents spend money: pay for groceries, toys, restaurants, vacations, but they themselves rarely have the spend money on things. And yet, they have to learn about it. To help make it easier to connect the concept of money, I want to get iPads and cases for the classroom, to use for apps to help with money, as well as to be able to use the many online programs my school has purchased to help my students with the better understanding of finances. We can bridge many gaps through financial literacy, reading about money and connecting it is and why it is important.
Donations to this project will help my students tremendously.
My students lack technology to encourage connections to the classroom and real life, which is one of the main goals of math in today's instruction. We will use these iPad minis and the apps and various online programs to connect math, reading, technology, and financial literacy.
