Financial Literacy Comes to Life!

Help me give my students incentive items to use with our classroom economy. Items, such as wireless speakers, notepads, banks, amazon gift cards and candy, that students may purchase with their discretionary funds.

My Project

We run our math classroom by using a classroom economy. The students have classroom jobs where they earn a weekly paycheck. They also earn bonuses for a variety of things, such as growth on diagnostic testing, showing kindness, stretching their mathematical thinking, etc. They must also pay monthly bills, such as rent, utilities, and cell phone bills.

An auction is held every quarter and students may spend discretionary funds to bid and purchase items.

The requested items, such as pens, expo markers, mini flashlights, and amazon gift cards are among the many items auctioned off each quarter. The gift cards reward students who save the most using our classroom economy. Those that save are the ones with enough funds to purchase the gift cards at our quarterly auctions. Saving is an essential component of learning financial literacy skills.

This classroom economy helps tremendously with classroom management. More importantly, students learn how to budget, write checks and save discretionary funds for wants and/or needs.
