My Students

"Learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, living to serve" - Future Farmers of America motto.

I'm a middle school English teacher and high school elective teacher at a school for the deaf serving preschool through the 12th grade.

Our school follows the bilingual philosophy by integrating American Sign Language (ASL) and English in all academic content areas. Our students thrive by have full and equal access to communication directly with their teachers and peers. Some of our students have long commute to school and live within 50 miles radius. I recently founded an after school programed called The Farmer's club for 4th grade and up.

My Project

We are requesting a cash box, produce scale, food scale, textbooks, books and a lab manual. Our school offers a variety of after school clubs and programs for students to have the opportunity to socialize with other deaf/hard of hearing students and to experience different things. In the Farmer's Club, students will learn how to grow a variety of organic crops including herbs, corn, beans, onion, sunflower, pumpkin, etc. In addition to learning how to grow food and how to maintain a garden, they will learn the economics aspect of it including how to determine the market price to sell produce at a farmer's market, how to market their product, how to manage our farm with outgoing expenses and incoming revenue, and how our small-scale garden compare to a large-scale farm and more about the agriculture industry. Financial literacy is strongly intertwined in managing a garden or a farm in making financial decisions on a budget to grow a garden and to make a profit.

The Farmer's Club is available to 4th grade and up.

Students are enthusiastic to learn how to grow different types of plants as well as making conscious and active plans to grow a variety of crop, make expense decisions, financial management, and sale of crops. We need scales to help use determine sale price, receipt booklets to document our sales for money management, and books to help us learn more about agriculture economics.
