Financial Literacy - A Matter of Life or Debt

My students need basic school supplies, snacks, art supplies, and games they can purchase while playing a financial literacy game called "Life or Debt".

My Students

According to a report released in December 2014, the average US household credit card debt stands at $15,611. Learning how to use a credit card responsibly is one of the ways we can help students become financially literate. It is a matter of "life or debt".

My students are academically gifted students attending a globally themed school.

The particular group of students that would benefit from this project are in the 4th and 5th grade. These students demonstrate their ability to be the movers and shakers, problem solvers, creative thinkers, and leaders in their classes, the school, and some day in our world. In fact, many of them are members of the Junior Beta Club. As such, they volunteer many hours collecting items for people in need and caring for the school grounds through beautification projects. A recent project includes collecting donations to support a college scholarship fund. Each of these students sees college as a part of their future. The question is how will they handle the almost certain debt that will be accrued while striving toward the goal of a college degree?

My Project

My Project: Day 1 of school - Students are given a fake credit card and told they have been hired as a student worker in the classroom. The salary is $100 per week ($20 per day) and students must be in attendance all day to earn the pay. Each time students need materials for a project, they will be required to purchase the items through the classroom using either money they have earned or their credit card. As often as possible, 2 versions of the same item will be available to represent bargain shopping. We might even incorporate sales or coupons. We will also have items that represent wants rather than needs. Students will be faced with making the choice to save or spend. Occasionally, students will be presented with an unexpected expense. The entire simulation will be focused on living debt free. There will be interest accruing, pay days, due dates to pay the credit card, etc. What we need to pull this off are some basic school supplies, art supplies, snacks, and games.

Throughout the typical school year, students in our gifted programs complete many projects.

These projects are rigorous and require numerous supplies. We always find a way to get the supplies students need but I want to hold students more accountable and teach a little about using credit cards. I want them to be just a little more invested in the project because they will have to "purchase" the materials for each project. Help us make these real "life or debt" decisions. Thank you.
