This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are 98% Hispanic and most are fairly recent immigrants. I would like to give them a gift which addresses the inequity they face due to a lack of financial awareness in the Hispanic community: summer reading material about Financial Literacy from a Hispanic author whom they know, Yanely Espinal.

According to research at Penn State University, “Hispanic Americans still are struggling with financial literacy….

a large proportion of Hispanic families experience negative impacts from the lack of financial knowledge, such as lack of financial stability and overall decreases in wellbeing.….. only 34% of Hispanics could pass a basic financial literacy test; this was compared to 42% of the general population. More drastic however was the fact that Hispanics were more likely to use high-cost payday loans, which is typically a loan for $500 or less with extremely high-interest rates... Furthermore, Hispanics were found to be less likely to have a savings or checking account….. These findings indicate that the Hispanic population faces significant financial challenges and are in need of supplemental financial support.”

This book will help motivate them and help them reach parity with their peers in the area of personal finance.
