Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine living in NYC but because you go to school in the Bronx, you only have a 70% chance of graduating from high school? Now add to this the fact that you came to high school speaking a language other than English- and your chances of graduation get even smaller.
I teach at a high school in the heart of the Bronx helping students who are learning English become college-ready in Math and Science.
A lot of our students move quickly into learning English, even if they struggle with literacy in their home language. Although they enter our school with little limited English, we join them in their goal of graduating from high school in just 4 years. They are hard-working and want to make a better future - for themselves, and our city.
My Project
Hybrid and remote learning shouldn't mean that students don't get to participate in clubs.
The math team wants to start a virtual after-school club to help our students learn essential finance skills.
These books would allow students to read throughout the week and then come to a weekly club where they discuss budgets, investing, saving, and how debt (including college loans) impact our finances.
These skills are not in our typical math curriculum but we know they are vital to the success of our students as they begin to get jobs, choose careers and colleges.
