Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our school is located in the poorest congressional district in the nation, and all students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. The school is predominately Latino and African American. Thirty percent of the students are English language learners, and some are the first of their families to graduate. Despite all of this, 100% of our graduating seniors are college or career bound.
Our students should have the same opportunities as any other student in the country.
They work hard to succeed without letting anything get in their way. As a community school, each year our graduation rate has increased, and we want to make their learning as meaningful and purposeful as possible.
The month of June is a super stressful and busy time for the students, as they take their end-of-the-year regents exams. This year, the teachers want to create goodie bags for them, so they can snack on in between exams, and even have some available to eat during the exams. We plan on placing goodie bags filled with little chocolates and other candies, like Sour Patch Kid or lollipops in plastic bags so they can keep them underneath their desk or in their lockers. The senior class student government will help us pack the candy bags because they know what their fellow students like to munch on.
