My Students

Middle school students are special. They're in this wondrous time of life when they're figuring out they are, what they may want to be. They're beginning to define their life, and as their teacher, I get to watch and help. Often, books are one of the most important tools they have as they work through this process.

My students are readers, every single one of them.

Some of them don't always realize they're readers. Sometimes. it takes a little while to find just the right book. Sometimes they need a nudge.

Many of my students come to school tired and hungry and worn out from the difficulties and pressures they face at home. The books they find in my classroom library and in the school library provide an outlet to escape their own life and find respite in another world.

My Project

I believe in reading. I believe that all my students are readers and can find a book they can love.

My students are eating up books faster than I can find new ones.

They read individually in class for 20-30 minutes daily, and even more at home. At this rate, they've gone through what I've got on my shelves, and are hungry for more.

As they read these novels and non-fiction texts of their own choosing, they're strengthening their reading chops. Textbook stories that used to elicit groans because of their length are now no big deal. Long passages on tests aren't the intimidating beasts they once were.

With more choices, my students will become stronger and stronger independent readers, which means they are better equipped to succeed academically as they move on to high school.
