Filling in Our Fantasy Holes

My Project

My 5th and 6th grade students love series, especially fantasy series with epic adventures that continue through multiple books. Series like the Wings of Fire, DragonBreath, and the Ranger's Apprentice grab their attention with the first book and keep them reading for weeks.

Over the years, many of our favorite fantasy series have developed holes, and nothing is more frustrating than finishing one book in your new favorite series and discovering that the next book is lost.

One of my 5th graders this year started reading the Warriors series, only to discover that we were missing Book #2. He switched to the Survivors series and loved it, but was extraordinarily frustrated to find out that we are also missing Book #2 in the Survivors series. This happens at least once a month.

While our students work hard to keep track of their library books and return them to the library, sometimes books go missing. Because over 85% of students at our school qualify for free and reduced lunch, we do not charge students lost book fines. Many students wouldn't be able to take their books home to read or even check out library books at all if there was any risk of fines because their families can't afford any extra expenses. Without fines, we can't replace the lost books so we need help to make our fantasy series complete again. This project replaces the missing books in our most popular fantasy series. In addition, because the first book of the series is usually the one that goes missing, this project makes sure all series will have two copies of Book #1.
