My Students
Did your teenage self ever daydream what your room might look like if you had unlimited resources? What if you were given the tools to create a photorealistic drawing of this room? These artist-grade colored pencils will give my students the tools they need to create stunningly lifelike drawings.
I teach at an urban, arts magnet high school serving a high poverty population.
Students audition in 6th grade, and about 20% of the students who audition will gain admission for their 7th grade year.
Once in high school, students spend two periods a day in art class. The arts motivate our students to come to school every day, and as a result, we have the best attendance and graduation rate in the district. (We have a 90% graduation rate compared to a district average of 37%.) This 90-minute block of time also allows us to get to know our students' stories and dreams. For many of these teens, school is the only place they feel safe, where the heat works, or where they're allowed to be a kid. I want to provide them with the opportunity to create projects they'll remember long after they graduate.
My Project
I am requesting 22 sets of Prismacolor brand colored pencils. These colored pencils will enable us to study one point perspective. Each student will design his or her dream room, using the rules of one point perspective to make their project look realistic. Prismacolor pencils blend and layer well. They will enable my students to experiment with advanced drawing techniques and create lifelike drawings. Many of my students strive to be able to draw "something that looks like a photograph," and these materials will make that dream possible.
Our students know about tight budgets; the entire district qualifies for free lunch.
