My Students
I am so lucky to be working with such an amazing, diverse, driven group of second grade scholars. These students are in one of the lowest-income schools in the state (92% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch) and face many challenges both in and out of the classroom, but every day they rise to those challenges and excel as learners and community members.
My students are energetic, caring, and creative.
They support one another all day, toward becoming their best selves and stretching toward their highest potentials. They are the next generation of doctors, teachers, engineers, entrepreneurs, and artists. While we do well with the resources we have, these students deserve all the same opportunities and tools that kids at much wealthier schools enjoy.
My Project
These books will help students feel represented, inspired, and celebrated. Our diverse population of scholars deserve to regularly see aspects of themselves in book after book that they read.
The picture books and series books (fiction and non-fiction alike) in this project celebrate protagonists of color and are written by authors of color, ensuring that my classroom library is representative and celebrates the joy in a wide range of identities.
While students have been learning from home, many haven't had access to a breadth of literature that meets these needs and it will be ever more important to have these incredible and inspirational books available to them upon their return to our classrooms for read-alouds, reading instruction, and independent reading practice.
