Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

October is Filipino-American Heritage Month, and our class celebrated it for the first time this past October. We had so much fun learning all about Filipino Americans and the culture they have brought to California. It was incredible to see how much of the California culture they have influenced, from food to farmer workers' rights. They have deep roots in California, and we are lucky to have this opportunity to learn more about them. So this month, we started preparing for next year under the direction of one of the Filipino-American students. She explained to our class that food is essential to family and culture, so we included cookbooks which we hope to add to our school library. The cookbook we chose is The Filipino-American Kitchen: Traditional Recipes, Contemporary Flavors, The Easy Filipino Cookbook: 100 Classics Made Simple, and, Filipinx: Heritage Recipes from the Diaspora. This way, everyone has an opportunity to learn more about Filipino cuisine.

We also wanted to talk about how Filipino-Americans helped shape our community and how they helped create the California experience we know and love.

To help us learn about our local East Bay Filipino experience and history, we include the book Filipinos in the East Bay. We also have books about the larger bay area and Northern California history. We have included books like Filipinos in San Francisco and Filipinos in Stockton. We also wanted to examine the history of Filipino-American Farmer workers and labor organizers like Larry Itliong: Labor Rights Hero. We also wanted to learn about innovators like Pedro Flores, who helped create and market the modern-day Yo-Yo. We also wanted to include some YA Novels that feature Filipino-American main characters. We selected books from different genes and human interests to mystery, something for everyone.
