Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 25 of the most amazing 4th graders who are a perfect mixture of general education and ELL students. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay for after school so they can have dinner as well. We are in a very rough neighborhood, but my kiddos don't give up!

My students need to know that the only way to get better at anything that is difficult is to practice, not give up.

Hopefully they will take these ideas back with them to use in the homeless shelters so other kids benefit too. I am hoping for a ripple effect!

My Project

I have been teaching 5th grade departmentalized Literacy for the past several years. This year I was moved to 4th grade and I am teaching all subjects again. Unfortunately, I gave away most of my games and activities when I stopped teaching 4th grade. Lesson learned!

Unfortunately, many of our students are homeless and face the reality of having to live in shelters.

Because they are in shelters, they sometimes feel like school is a burden. I want them to know that school is fun. The Math and ELA File Folder Games will show them that learning is fun and that it matters. It will give them something to look forward to about coming to school each day.

My group of 4th graders really need fun activities and games to practice skills during small group and center learning time. If they don't practice, they won't improve. Nothing makes practice fun like a great file folder activity. When students are given the opportunity to practice skills and strategies in a fun way, they don't realize they are learning because they are having fun. This is how learning should be! Drill and Practice can only help so much, students also need to have fun while learning! That's why centers and games are so important.
