This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities. Most of these are not qualities they are proud of, but they deal with what they are given. The results are mixed, but their drive never stops.

My Project

The materials requested will all be used to make file folder games and hands-on activities for my students. In 8 years of teaching at my current school, this group of students is the most in need of foundational skills, and activities that go along with them. Some cannot match letters of the alphabet, one cannot count past 5, one is non-verbal, one is selectively mute.

My students need activities that address the most basic skills.

I have so many resources for hands-on games that reinforce these skills, but I need the materials to make them a reality. Game pieces will be printed on card stock or colored paper and glued to file folders. Boards and pieces are laminated and cut out, and students play the games to help reinforce skills. I need to make games to help match letters and numbers, sort letters and numbers, find missing sounds, and a plethora of other activities!

A simple game with matching numbers will help a student feel success. matching letters, matching numbers to pictures or words...these are all skills that my students lack. Because their needs are so high, I want to try to put together activities that they can do independently or with a partner so that my assistant and I can maximize our time with them.
