Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Statistics doesn't sound like the most engaging topic for high school students, but it's important for college and for the real world. An engaging text will help my students make sense of this complicated subject.

My students are smart, hard-working, funny, kind, friendly, diverse, smart young people.

They are also poor, underserved, at-risk youth in a poor, urban community in California. Most of my students are seniors who will go on to either a two-year community college or a four-year public university. Did I mention that they're smart?

My Project

"The Cartoon Guide to Statistics" is an engaging text that will give my students access to a challenging subject. Although the ideas in the book are sophisticated, they are presented in a format that is easy to read. How often can that be said about a statistics book? A class set of this book will guide us in organizing and summarizing data, understanding the rules of probability, making sense of distributions and designing experiments.

Understanding probability and statistics and being able to use them to model the world we live in, is important because it will allow my students to participate fully in our society.

From studying economics and psychology, to reading the newspaper, statistical models will be part of their adult lives. I want to help them make sense of the data they will encounter.
