Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
5th grade math starts off with the why and how for how math works and then moves to algorithm, something that we sometimes call “math math.” In our class, we spend time going deep in our understanding of the why and how by using models and manipulatives. When students understand why math works, they start to see the bigger picture for math, they can make more connections to previous math, and they can connect to math that we study later in the school year. In previous years, I have built manipulative boxes that students keep at their work groups. These kits contain fraction tiles, base ten blocks, counting chains, fraction circles, etc. Students know that they can use a math tool (manipulative) whenever they need to in order to support their learning or thinking. What I have found, though, is that the kits I have previously built need to grow. As students have branched out and become more proficient in explaining their thinking with manipulatives, they often run out of a certain type of manipulative or there is just not enough to share within the group.
I have seen the positive impact that math manipulatives have had with my students.
The tools help students model and explain their thinking, allow them to work collaboratively on large models while discussing why they agree or disagree with each other, and they provide a concrete way for students to interact with math.
The goal of this project is to expand the math manipulative kits so that students have access to support their thinking when working with decimals, volume, division, multiplication, and place value. By expanding the kits, more students will be able to use the manipulatives during whole class and small group instruction.
