My students need a variety of books addressing the many different facets of dealing with life as LGBTQ teens or supporters of their friends who live this way.

My Students
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." ~ Oscar Wilde
This idea is so tough for teens, especially ones with deal with gender identity issues. Many teens are struggling to figure out who they are and need a little encouragement to know there are others who have been in their shoes.
Many students with gender identity issues come to my library as a place of acceptance.
I want to have reading materials for them, both fiction and nonfiction, that can help them feel more comfortable in their own skin and know that they are not alone. They tend to be the ones who come in to the library either before school or during lunch just to get away from all the crowds. They may be nervous to talk to someone but they are highly likely to chose a book that may guide them through a rough time.
My Project
I have chosen fiction titles that will address many types of genders through main characters, friends or family members. I have selected memoirs of teens who have been through the very same things that my students are going through. I have selected nonfiction books of some LGBTQ role models and the history of gay rights and marriage. All the materials are grade appropriate and reviewed by School Library Journal or Booklist. Many won the Lambda Award.
It is my hope that LGBTQ students find some comfort in similar characters in books.
That they learn about success stories and the history behind where we are today. That they realize they are not alone.
