Students who attend my school largely consist of academically high achievers. Their families put great importance on the core classes, but are not as supportive of involvement in the arts. A majority of students come from Vietnamese households where math, science, and business are the central focus. More than half of my students come from households where English is a second language, if spoken at all.
Students who wish to continue studying Drama and the arts must be fiercely passionate in order to withstand disapproval from family and friends.
My Project
Many students have difficulty engaging with Shakespeare's plays because the text feels "old and stuffy." By learning proper stage combat techniques, students will not only engage with the text in an exciting way, they will learn to bring it to life themselves by creating a Shakespeare scene using the stage combat techniques learned in the workshop series. Stage combat will also inspire students to further investigate the arts and the variety of skills learned in the theater. Parents and families will be more supportive when they realize self-defense techniques are naturally included in this expert demonstration and hands-on experience with trained, working professionals.
More than half of students from low‑income households
