Fifth Graders Need Recess Materials to Increase Financial Literacy!

Help me give my students recess and class store materials to help increase their financial literacy such as Monopoly, Legos, Trouble, Candy Land, pretzels, fruit snacks, oreos and other snacks.

My Project

I'm moving up from fourth to fifth and want to provide my students' games to play during recess to increase their financial literacy as well as a class store to help them with financial literacy. This project will provide everything my partner teacher and I need to create a class store and have indoor recess! I teach at a Title-1 school located in Central Florida, 98% of students at my school are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches.

This project will help provide important lifelong lessons for 28 fifth grade students.

With this project, we will be able to set up a classroom economy system in which students earn "class cash" by completing classroom job duties, outstanding attendance (which is a huge issue at our school), following SOPs, demonstrating growth on diagnostic assessments and other demonstrated behaviors worth rewarding. Students will also practice financial literacy while playing these various games during recess: Monopoly, Trouble, Guess Who, and Sorry.

This project will allow my students the opportunity to learn about financial literacy through a classroom economy, as well as increase daily attendance, and classwork completion and encourage appropriate behaviors.

Students will be able to choose from the variety of prizes listed within this project (chips, crackers, fruit snacks). Instead of focusing on the negative behaviors (clip down, change your card systems), I am choosing to highlight the positive behaviors in which students are praised and awarded for following the directions and being model students. We will also use the wall calendar to keep track of "store days" and the small table to help with our store.

The recess materials will be used daily, as well as a LEGO Table to store the LEGO blocks, and a label maker to label all of the resources.
