My Students
This year will be my first year as a fifth grade teacher. For the past year I have been the computer lab instructor. Each day students walked into my classroom and sat on the large area rug in the computer lab to hear directions before being sent to their seats to work on the computers. When I walked into my new fifth grade classroom for the 2016-2017 year, I was surprised to see that there isn't a rug for my future students to sit on!
My incoming, sweet fifth graders will need a large and comfy rug to sit on during class meetings.
Every morning my students and I will meet in a large group on the carpet to just talk and build relationships with each other. Before each subject all of my students will come to the rug while I teach a mini-lesson followed by instructions once they head to their tables. This school is a Title I school and I expect to have nearly 25 students. While some students are coming from a low-income background, it is my goal to make school a fun, safe, and positive experience for all of my students.
My Project
Every day students will come to the rug to meet with each other, build a community within the classroom, and be involved in lessons and learning. There is not a rug in the classroom right now. Without a rug, my students would have to sit on a cold, tile floor. Adding a rug to our classroom would not only make it where students have a warm and comfy place to sit, but it would create an area where students want to be while learning.
Because our classroom has flexible seating, a rug would be the perfect addition to our classroom.
Students could sit on the rug while reading or working on an assignment. The rug would make our classroom have more of a warm and positive atmosphere and a create an environment where students can be themselves.
More than half of students from low‑income households
