Fifth Grade Physical Science Matters!

My students need supplies to bring Physical Science to life! Fifth graders learn that matter is everywhere but is made of particles too small to be seen.We need Red Laser Pointers, Double-Burner Hot Plate, cups, spoons, light bulbs, and spoons. These items will create hands-on experiments and investigations.

My Students

We like to think of our TK/K-5th grade school as producing well-rounded, whole children who make healthy choices for their minds, bodies, and spirits. We teach them to care about achieving academically, pushing their bodies to gain physical strength, flexibility, and stamina, and finding joy in the performing and fine arts.

My 5th grade students strive to thrive with challenges that enable them to collaborate, communicate, be creative and critical thinkers who can make a difference.

Our community is very stable with many families who have a long history in the area. Other families return after college with their own families to attend this well regarded elementary school. In fact, some of our teachers on staff were once students!

Because we are a high academic achieving school, we often do not qualify for the same grant and state funding that schools of lower socioeconomic status would. This does not mean, though, that we are any less worthy, nor do we necessarily have the funds to provide the students with the complete opportunities we would like.

My Project

Six different hands-on experiments can be done with these supplies. For example, students will dissolve sugar into water then taste the mixture. They learn sugar particles are still present even without being seen when the mixture tastes sweet. In another experiment, students will design a way to identified salt water from fresh water. A third experiment will have students explore how a change in temperature and production of a gas are signs of a chemical reaction.

Giving students access to "do" rather than "read about" science is a much more powerful way for students to truly learn, enjoy, and succeed in science.

This could open so many eyes and boost confidence in so many fifth grade students.
