Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

At our high school, we provide a rigorous, hands-on science program for at risk youth who are on probation. We offer two science courses, which include biology and environmental science. Students pursue their own questions, design experimental procedures, practice collecting data, analyze and draw conclusions based on their data, and also, through a strong writing component, students learn to communicate, justify, and publish their conclusions.

My students need 2 copies of fossil field guides, a rock hammer, and 2 GPS 2 way radios. We will begin our unit on evolution by searching for fossils at a fossil hunting site near our school. The GPS 2 way radios allow teams to keep in contact document location of fossil finds, and store and send GPS locations for coordinating field work between two groups. This equipment will also be used in fieldwork for pond biology and the biodiversity blitz (please see our other projects). Students that are on probation are at a very important turning point in their lives. They are mostly very talented and intelligent, but for many reasons turned off to school. This project offers them an opportunity to do important field work that supports the ecology of three ponds near our school. When they are engaged in meaningful hands-on work, they look very much like college students and make wonderful observation, ask great questions and begin to consider academics as an actual option for improving their future.

When students engage in scientific fieldwork, they bring their level of work to a higher standard and retain the knowledge they are building through first hand research. When they return to the classroom, they are filled with a whole range of meaningful questions for further study.

Your donation will allow students to accurately document the location of their fieldwork in biology and environmental science as we continue our fieldwork in pond biology and begin our fossil hunting unit (as evidence of evolution).
