Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Extended time in nature develops the senses, the eyes' ability to learn through observation, sounds and smells help the scientist to be able to sense the natural world in a way that most people do not perceive. It takes time, experience and practice. My students are inner-city high school youth on juvenile probation. Many live in "the hood" and the extent of their time outdoors is dedicated to hanging out on "the block"
Students who are facing the issues of inner-city violence, gangs, crime and drugs, tend to have less confidence in academic settings. In order for them to have success in college and in the professional world they must begin to trust their natural intelligence. The must quiet their minds and trust their senses.
My students need access to equipment that helps them become more engaged in using their powers of observation. They need to work with a partner documenting the wildlife in one of the largest urban parks in the nation. They need a group set of 4 Meade CaptureView binoculars with built-in digital camera. This will support a group of eight students, working in pairs, to conduct biological surveys of the birds and wildlife, and digitally document what they find.
You can help students discover their natural intelligence, their "inner scientist". This will help them turn toward a future in college. We find that when students engage in this type of fieldwork, the negativity that has been surrounding them tends to fade away for a while, and they can begin to access their natural abilities to learn through observation, setting up research questions and conducting fieldwork of the type that is required in upper division science classes in college and grad school. Please make any size donation, because when you donate to these students, you are saying to them, I believe in you.
