My students need experiences outside our urban neighborhood. A field trip to the pumpkin patch will cement and reinforce our classroom learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are interested in the world around them. They are city kids with a keen interest in learning new things. They love to explore, to write, to build and to read. They come into my class with little to no socialization, so we spend the beginning of our year learning procedures and how to be good students.
My students come from an impoverished background, but they also have strong family ties and parents who want the best for them.
Our school is very large and with the latest state budget cuts, our class will be much larger than normal. This won't stop us from becoming a school family looking out for each other and learning everything we can in this first pivotal year of school.
My Project
Pumpkins started out as a thematic unit for kindergarten. Then it moved to project based learning. Our students will not only study the life cycle, they will taste a pumpkin, they will count pumpkin seeds, they will make pumpkin pie in a cup and most importantly, they will get to visit a real farm that grows pumpkins. They will get to go through a hay maze and ride on a tractor pulled hayride. They will pick a pumpkin of their very own to take home.
The field trip to a real farm that grows pumpkins can not be replicated in our small classrooms.
This is an opportunity most of our students would not have in their day to day lives. Learning through experience has such a strong impact on kindergarten students. They love opportunities to explore and be part of the world around them.
