Field Trip to Aquarium

My students need to experience up close interactive learning at the Aquarium in order to acquire state standards that focus on the ocean. They also need books on Sharks.

My Students

"Either you decide to stay in the shallow end of the pool or you go out in the ocean" Christopher Reeve. The students in our class struggle with learning, but they are encouraged and expected to "go out in the ocean" by taking charge of their learning and going beyond what is expected of them.

The students are in a self contained resource room.

They have the opportunity to work with a paraprofessional and a special education teacher. The students are identified as having multiple disabilities or autism. They are an unique group of students who have a special zest for learning. They are an inspiration to everyone they meet.

My Project

The trip to the Cleveland Aquarium will give students an opportunity of a life time. We have been studying the ocean including animal habitats and how they adapt to their environment. The trip will give the students a way to make their learning meaningful and a chance to see learned concepts in action. Everyone learns in a different way and the experience will deepen their learning while exposing them to new interests. We will learn about sharks, their habitats, and how they adapt to their environment. The shark books that we will receive will be used as part of a research project that they will complete over the summer. Students will be expected to return the projects in the fall. The books will be added to our class library, and they will receive a shark fact book in return.

Field Trips are always very exciting and meaningful!

The project will allow students to have a better understanding of what they have been learning. The home project will lend students to generalizing the information and spark their interest in carrying over research skills between home and school. The field trip and project will enrich our animal and landscape instruction next school year.
