I am a special education teacher, so all of my students are diagnosed with one or more disabilities. I am fortunate enough to have a wide range in ages that I interact with throughout the day. In the morning I am with students who are anywhere from 3 years old to 5 years old. Then, in the afternoon I teach 5th and 6th grade Math and ELA.
Despite their disabilities, all of my students are eager to learn and thrive during our hands-on learning.
I have experienced that, just like non-disabled students, my students take in and remember the lesson well when it is hands-on and visual. My students struggle in school and anything I can do to make it easier and more enjoyable for them is well worth it.
My Project
I have found a program through the 4H Foundation of Cleveland County in Oklahoma that provides an incubator, curriculum, eggs, bedding, feed, bowls, and a safe home following the arrival of the chicks. I also want my students to experience the life cycle of a tadpoles and caterpillars.
These experiences for my students would benefit them in many aspects of their academic day.
They would increase their vocabulary, begin to learn life cycle processes, and have the enjoyment of caring for the different creatures. These are the type of hands-on activities children remember for the rest of their lives. Not only is it science, but it also includes literacy lessons as well.
