My Project
At Head Start we serve children 3-5 years of age that are considered to be 'at-risk' because of things like low-income, trauma, unstable home lives, developmental delays, and many other things. Especially post-COVID, some of these children come to us lacking skills to even be able to sit still for more than 30 seconds.
While most Kindergarten teachers would love our students to come to their rooms prepared with the knowledge of all their letters, numbers, counting to 30, and writing their names, I feel like my job is best spent making sure all our students have the ability to learn.
Our classroom goal is for our children to go to Kindergarten as TEACHABLE students - can they can walk in a line down the hall, can they can sit in the cafeteria without throwing food, and most of all, can they sit at the carpet and learn as a whole group?
With this project we will be able to provide a fidget bucket at circle time so each child can have something in their hands (instead of toys/blocks/materials on the shelves around them) while they focus on the teacher/visitors lesson. We will also be able to provide them with inviting materials to keep their focus for short periods of time that is developmentally appropriate for the group as a whole.
