My Students
We are a suburban high school with rural roots. Our students are ethnically, culturally and socioeconomically diverse. As a large school, we have the advantage of being able to offer students a variety of courses, extracurricular activities, and supports.
Our challenge is to connect all of our students in a meaningful way to our school community, so they can find their passions in life.
We strive to meet this challenge by creating small communities within the school, so that all students can find their place on campus, and can explore and expand their interests in a safe environment.
My Project
Help me to provide my students with a variety of fidgets from which to choose, so they can wiggle discretely and non-distractingly while they learn.
Fidgeting can increase student focus, so this project will help my students be mentally present while learning science.
The fidgets in this project can be held in one hand, and manipulated without looking, so students can be engaged in other activities at the same time, like taking notes, collaborating with peers, or reading.
I anticipate some anxiety about returning to full in-person school after more than a year away, and these materials will help my students calm themselves so they can fully participate in our classroom community.
