Fidgets and Focus Tools for First Grade

My Students

I teach 29 students at an elementary school in southeast Denver, and they are some of the most loving and wonderful kids I have ever taught. They are smart, curious, kind, and absorb knowledge like sponges.

My students are eager to learn and do their best; they want to be at school learning and being successful every day but sometimes their focus and attention can get in the way of their learning.

As a teacher, I have found my students do better academically and are able to focus for longer periods of time if they have something to keep their hands busy. Fidgets are the perfect gadget as they are small enough for students to take to classes and can easily be sanitized in the age of COVID. It's my goal to have a variety of different fidget and focus tools to help my kids succeed in learning.

Have you ever rolled something in-between your fingers or even the simple act of doodling while sitting through a meeting? Those actions are sensory movements done to release the need for stimulation. For children these many kinds of sensory fidget toys will positively impact their learning environment no matter where they are.

My Project

Everyone fidgets. Some just fidget more than others. Fidgeting is our body’s way of releasing restless energy. Common types of fidgeting include foot tapping, hair twirling or nail biting. Fidget toys are self-regulation tools to help with focus, attention, calming, and active listening. There are many different types of fidget toys, ranging from squeezable stress balls to bendable sticks to malleable putty.

In addition to the improved learning benefits, fidget toys can also reduce anxiety and stress, enhance dexterity, improve coordination and fine motor skills and assist in the development of muscles of small hands.

Having fidget toys in the classroom on hand for students who need them would be a game changer!
