Help me give my students flexible seating, non-distractive fidgets, and timers that my students can use to improve their learning environment and productivity.
Hello! I am thrilled to have the amazing opportunity to teach another wonderful group of 5th-grade students this year. This is my first year teaching a group of dual language immersion students and, while it has definitely been a learning opportunity for me, I have loved being their teacher. My students are motivated, creative, and fun-loving individuals who enjoy learning and trying new things.
Each of my students have very unique learning styles and needs.
I have found that our classroom learning environment has a huge impact on my students’ successes. While some do well working with others frequently, some generally prefer to work alone. Others may be incredibly self-motivated, while others may need to set a goal that allows them to work for a period of time before taking a short break. I also have many students who tend to focus best when they have some sort of non-disruptive fidget to use while they work. I am hoping that this Donor’s Choose fundraiser will help me continue to build and create an environment where every student can find success.
My Project
Since returning to the classroom, I have found that my students have a harder time prioritizing and focusing on their work in comparison to the students who were in my classroom prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The circumstances surrounding the pandemic have created a lot of stressors, not only in my students' daily lives, but also in the ways they are taught and have to demonstrate learning.
Fidgets and flexible seating have been found to help reduce stressors and anxiety in the classroom.
I already have a few options for this in my classroom, but I would like to provide opportunities for everyone to get what they need.
I have also added cube timers to this project. Focusing can be very challenging for some students. I have found that providing students with a cube timer allows them to set a short goal for working, then reward themselves with a short break (for example, a student will work hard for 15 minutes, then take a 5 minute break to read, stand up, etc.). I would like to have more of these timers in my classroom, as many students are motivated by doing this, and it is something they can do independently and adjust to their own needs.
