My Students

"They tried to bury us. They didn't know we were seeds."

Our students are resilient.

They grow up in a city and neighborhood with an ill-reputed history of violence and crime. However, I'm more familiar with our students' goofy faces and big dreams than the violence. I'm more familiar with their families' hard work, warm welcomes, handshakes, and sharing of food than the crime.

The facts are: 87% of our graduates are the first in their family to go to college; 65% of our graduates are the first in their family to finish high school. Our students break barriers when they walk into our doors every single day by getting an education their parents weren't able to. Our students' "light bulb" moments mean so much more to us than you can imagine.

My Project

After the 1.5 year-long shelter-in-place, many students have found it difficult to focus in class. Cell phone use in class has gone up, and no amount of discipline or taking students' phones away will change this fact. In my interactions with students, I have found that giving students something for their hands and bodies to do in class has been extremely helpful. They say that sometimes, they are just using their phones to have something to do during class.

As a teacher with ADHD myself, I sympathize with my students and their difficulties with focusing in class right now.

I understand that punishing them for this right now isn't helpful, either. I'm committed to finding solutions that work for both my students and myself in class so that 1. they can learn and 2. they can better understand themselves and what helps them focus in class.

This list of items is a first in a couple projects I will ask to be funded on DonorsChoose - some items for students' hands to work with during class and some items for students to use their feet on. I've already found Play-Doh and kinetic sand to be really helpful, so I'm hoping to have a continuous supply of fidgets and sensory objects for my high-schoolers to use.

Your donation will help students find their focus to tackle the rigorous subjects of biology and chemistry, which are hard enough without inattention issues. You will be funding a restorative solution that requires no punishment that pushes students out of the classroom and reaffirms they do not belong in the classroom. Students should be able to feel included in the classroom and take ownership of their learning and study habits, and by giving to my project, you can help students do just that.
