Help me give my students fidget toys like slinkys, squishy balls, silly putty, and other fidget toys for my students who have a hard time concentrating.
"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character, that is the goal of true education." - Martin Luther King Jr.
That is our goal here at our school and as a staff.
We strive to teach both the importance of education and character. You will find children from all walks of life, some that have it all and some that have lives that would break your heart. Something that brings them all together is our school, and I have found, for some, it is their safe haven. I love the enthusiasm my students all have for learning, and they love to discover new things.
One hundred percent of our school's children receive free lunch. We also border a reservation and have farms all around our rural area. As you can imagine, we are a very diverse school with many cultures that flow through our halls. It is a great place to work, and the children are incredible kids to teach. I love my job!
My Project
Every year I feel like I get more students who have a very hard time sitting and concentrating during lessons! I am not a teacher who feels like a student needs to sit and give attention like a drill sergeant. I have stand up desks for the kids who need to stand. Hoki stools for the kids who need to wiggle while they sit. I now need a few tools for my kids that struggle with their hands. I need some things that will allow them to squeeze and fidget instead of hitting desks or disturbing others around them.
I have many students that this will be useful, for but I have one in particular that really struggles with his emotions.
We have worked on breathing techniques when he feels the frustration coming and that works ok. But something that I notice when he is trying to calm down are his fists clenched really tight. I have tried to give him something to squeeze and I feel that has helped. I am asking for help getting silly putty, slinkies and squish balls for my students to use in times of frustration and in times of needing something for their hands to do.
