This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a school counselor to an Elementary School in a low income/high poverty neighborhood, I have come very familiar with the everyday struggles that our students face. While I cannot change the environment in which the students call home, I strive to provide all the resources and tools for our students at school in order to help them achieve both academically and socially.
Our students crave the love and support that is provided by our teachers and staff on a daily basis.
While many of our students come from single-parent homes with multiple siblings, positive attention is not always given. School is their "safe place". Just like we hold expectations for our students, our students hold expectations for us that go beyond the academic curriculum.
Our students are young, bright and determined. Despite the apparent achievement gaps and economic status of our families, our students are determined to grow and positively impact our world.
My Project
For any elementary student, especially those who come from stressful home environments, sitting in a classroom and focusing on the task at hand can be challenging. A lot of our students have trouble sitting in their seats for an extended period of time, or even keeping their hands to themselves. Although these behaviors are not always seen as disciplinary actions, many students are having to be sent out of the classroom due to the individualized attention that cannot be provided by their teacher. This then negatively effects their academic growth.
Your generous donation will provide students with fidgets and sensory toys that will not only occupy their wandering hands, but keep them engaged in the classroom.
These fidgets will help students focus on the academic material while meeting their sensory needs. Similarly, as a counselor who meets with students both individually and in small groups, these fidgets will be used to occupy students while they express their thoughts and feelings.
